What Is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy (also called dextrose prolotherapy) is an injection-based treatment that uses a dextrose solution, and other naturally occuring ingredients placed in specific areas of connective tissue.

This approach is intended to stimulate a localized response in the body. Research is ongoing to better understand how prolotherapy may support joint function and comfort in certain patients.

Conditions Commonly Evaluated for Prolotherapy

Patients often seek prolotherapy for concerns such as:

  • Knee pain/discomfort
  • Osteoarthritis-related symptoms
  • Shoulder pain or instability
  • Low back discomfort
  • Neck pain
  • Hip pain
  • Ligament or tendon irritation
  • General joint pain
  • Joint laxity

A medical evaluation is necessary to determine whether prolotherapy or another treatment may be appropriate.

Prolotherapy for Knee Pain & Osteoarthritis

Prolotherapy for the knee is one of the most commonly requested uses.

Some patients explore prolotherapy as part of a non-surgical approach to knee pain, or as an option to discuss before considering more invasive procedures.

Outcomes vary, and prolotherapy is not a replacement for all surgical or medical treatments.

Non-Surgical Options for Joint Pain

Many patients are looking for alternatives to surgery for knee or back pain.

Prolotherapy may be one of several options discussed during your consultation, along with other therapies, lifestyle adjustments, and possible alternatives where appropriate.

  • Review of symptoms and medical history
